Serving up a little spiritual refreshment …

ALTER YOUR LIFE – ACCEPT NO SECOND-BESTS…….. There is no need to be unhappy. We need not be disappointed, oppressed, or aggrieved. There is no need for illness or failure or discouragement. There is no necessity for anything but an abounding interest and joy in life.

As long as you accept a negative condition at its own valuation, you will remain in bondage to it; but you only have to assert your birthright as a free man or woman and you can and will be free.

Success and happiness are the natural conditions of humankind. It is actually easier for us to demonstrate these things than the reverse. Bad habits of thinking and acting, which unfortunately are all too easy to develop, may obscure this fact for a time, just as the wrong way of walking or sitting, or holding a pen may seem to be easier than the proper way, because we have accustomed ourselves to it; but the proper way is easier nevertheless.

Unhappiness, frustration, poverty loneliness are really bad habits that their victims have become accustomed to bear, believing that there is no way out, whereas there is a way; and that way is simply to acquire good habits of working with the Natural Law instead of against it.

We can learn a great deal about this principle from infants. Since they are uncontaminated by the defeatism of their elders they simply refuse to tolerate discord on any terms and they demonstrate loud and clear when it is encountered. When they are hungry they tell the world while the sophisticated adult goes without. Stuck with a pin they let you know-not for them a sigh of resignation to the supposed will of God or a whine about never having any luck. Their instincts tell them that life and harmony are inseparable.

Refuse to tolerate anything less than harmony! You can have a happy and joyous life. But to do so you must seize the rudder of your own destiny and steer boldly for the port you intend to make. A new attitude and a new way of thinking are essential and they can be yours if you really try. Spend some quiet time now deciding what to do about your future beginning with a brief prayer asking the Lord to guide you and help you.

Reflection exercises…

1. What are some of the recurring negative thoughts that I have and that I want to overcome?

2. What are three things or activities that bring me joy and contentment when I think about them? Commit to spending some time engaged in these things regularly.

3. How do I feel after I have prayed? Does my day go a lot better when I start my morning with prayer? Consider whether more frequent periods of prayer would be helpful.

4. Which habits or activities bring problems or unhappiness into my life? Starting with the most difficult one write down what you intend to do to address this problem including a time commitment of when you will do this. Be specific. For example if you suffer with an alcohol addiction you might say: “I’m going to contact Alcoholics Anonymous by noon tomorrow.”

5. Make a list of several new positive activities or habits that you want to develop and jot down your game plan to achieve them.
