Make A Pilgrimage

A pilgrimage is defined “as a journey to a holy place as a form of religious devotion, an act of penance, or to seek the intercession of a saint”. A pilgrimage may lead one to famous site in a distant country: Rome, Jerusalem, Fatima, and Lourdes are among the most popular destinations, or it may take place closer to home. There are many inspiring shrines in our own country or perhaps even in our own Diocese in the form of beautiful Churches and Cathedrals and other holy places.

A number of private tour companies specialize in Catholic pilgrimages. Moreover most Parishes offer pilgrimage opportunities at least every couple of years. If your Parish does not do this check with some others in your area. Be assured you will be very welcome to join them because the more people that sign up the more cost effective is the trip for the organizer.

Another pilgrimage opportunity may exist through your local Diocese. All Bishops are required to make a formal visit to the Holy See every five years to report to the Roman Curia and to the Holy Father personally on the status of their Diocese. This visit is called Ad limina. Many Dioceses organize a pilgrimage simultaneously with the Bishop’s visit. Usually your Bishop celebrates one or more Masses for you and arranges a tour of the Vatican Museum and attendance for your group at the Holy Father’s public audience, which takes place every Wednesday in St. Peter’s Square.

Regardless of your destination, someday you should make a pilgrimage, a spiritual pilgrimage to a holy place. There your friendship with God will be blessed.
